In a shocking incident at the Gare de Lyon rail station in Paris on Saturday, three people were injured by a man armed with a knife and hammer. The attack took place around 7:35 a.m., causing panic among commuters and passersby.

One victim suffered serious stomach wounds and was immediately rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery. Police have announced that the victim's injuries are life-threatening, emphasizing the severity of the situation. The two other victims sustained lighter wounds, but the exact nature of their injuries has not been disclosed.

Authorities have ruled out terrorism as a motive for the attack, instead suggesting that the suspect may be dealing with mental health issues. Laurent Nunez, the Paris police chief, commented on the situation, stating, "This individual appears to suffer from psychiatric troubles." Nunez, who is also responsible for the security of the upcoming Olympic Games in the city, assured the public that there are no indications of a terrorist act.

Passersby intervened and assisted railway police officers in apprehending the suspect. The attack occurred in one of the station's expansive halls, which sees millions of passengers traveling on high-speed trains connecting Paris to other cities, as well as its commuter train services to surrounding suburbs and towns in the Paris region.

The knife and hammer used in the assault are currently being analyzed by investigators. The Paris prosecutor's office confirmed that the police investigation is considering potential charges of attempted murder.

Unfortunately, this incident follows a series of knife attacks in France. In October, a Chechen immigrant on the country's extremist watchlist allegedly carried out a fatal stabbing of a teacher and injured two others in a suspected terrorist attack. Earlier in June, a Syrian refugee armed with a knife stabbed four young children and two adults near a lake in the French Alps. Additionally, in January of last year, at least six people were injured in an attack at Paris' Gare Du Nord train station.

As the investigation into this latest attack continues, authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
