The Jefferson County Police Department confirmed the charges on Wednesday following an investigation into the disturbing incident.

According to police reports, the victim contacted authorities on January 16, claiming that he believed his unexplained illness was a result of intentional poisoning by his wife, identified as Sarah Scheffer. The man informed officers that he had become suspicious of his wife's actions and suspected she had been adding unknown substances to his food and drinks for approximately six weeks.

The victim reported experiencing symptoms such as fatigue, confusion, blurred vision, dry mouth, and nausea during this period. Notably, he discovered a bag labeled "Lily of the Valley" on a table in their residence and observed a green bowl containing what he believed to be a root from the bag. He even provided the police with a photo of the bowl and a video showing Scheffer making a smoothie using its contents.

With the evidence in hand, law enforcement submitted the suspicious smoothie to the Missouri State Highway Patrol Laboratory for testing. In a shocking revelation, it was determined that a search of a national poison control center revealed that the substance used in the smoothie contained numerous cardiac glycosides, known to slow down the heart and cause irregular heart rhythm. The substance also possesses the potential to induce nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

Further research conducted online indicates that lily of the valley can produce symptoms including lethargy, confusion, blurred vision, and nausea, among others.

During police questioning, Scheffer confessed to putting lily of the valley in her husband's food, fully aware that it was both illegal and harmful.

As a result of these disturbing revelations, Sarah Scheffer now faces charges of attempted murder and armed criminal action. The case is expected to proceed through the judicial system, where Scheffer will have the opportunity to present her defense against the serious allegations.

The motive behind the alleged poisoning and the specifics of the couple's relationship have not been disclosed at this time. The victim's condition following the incident remains undisclosed as well.

This distressing case serves as a reminder of the importance of trust and transparent communication in any relationship, and the consequences that can arise when these fundamental elements are violated. Further updates on the case will be provided as more information becomes available.
