He was discovered by a Canadian fishing boat in a life raft in Canadian waters, approximately 70 miles northwest of Cape Flattery, Washington. The U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson, Petty Officer Steve Strohmaier, described the man's survival as "incredible and miraculous" considering the circumstances.
The missing fishing vessel had departed from Westport, Washington, on October 12 and was due to return on October 15. However, it wasn't until a week later that the Coast Guard was informed about their disappearance. The man found alive had been floating in the middle of nowhere, facing challenging conditions with little hope of rescue, as vessels passing by were infrequent.
The Canadian fishing boat that discovered him acted as a good Samaritan and immediately alerted the Canadian Coast Guard. They swiftly arrived at the location and transported the survivor back to shore, where he was then taken to a hospital. The man was reported to be in stable condition upon arrival.
Sadly, the search for the other missing person continues, and the incident remains under investigation by the U.S. Coast Guard. As of now, there is no confirmation regarding whether the search will resume. The Coast Guard is gathering information from eyewitness accounts and statements from the survivor to determine the next course of action.
The U.S. Coast Guard had posted details about the missing vessel, named Evening, on Tuesday, appealing for any information. After extensive search efforts covering over 14,000 square miles in over eight hours, the service temporarily suspended the search due to a lack of new information.
CNN has reached out to the Canadian Coast Guard for additional details on the incident. The story of the survivor's resilience and the ongoing search highlights the dangers faced by individuals at sea and the extraordinary efforts made by rescue agencies to ensure their safety.
