In a surprising move, Republican Rep. Tom Emmer, along with the three other Republican members of Minnesota's congressional delegation, has officially endorsed former President Donald Trump for the 2024 presidential race. Emmer, who represents Minnesota's 6th Congressional District and serves as the U.S. House Majority Whip, cited Trump's frontrunner status as a key factor in the decision.
"Democrats have made clear they will use every tool in their arsenal to try and keep Joe Biden and his failed policies in power. We cannot let them," Emmer stated on Wednesday. "It's time for Republicans to unite behind our party's clear frontrunner, which is why I am proud to endorse Donald J. Trump for President."
Joining Emmer in endorsing Trump are Reps. Brad Finstad, Michelle Fischbach, and Pete Stauber. The quartet's endorsement comes ahead of any individual state primaries or caucuses, with the first Republican caucus scheduled in Iowa on Monday, Jan. 15, followed by New Hampshire's primaries on Tuesday, Jan. 23.
Recent polls indicate that Trump holds a substantial lead over other Republican challengers for the nomination, suggesting a potential rematch between him and incumbent President Joe Biden. Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has shown some progress in the polls as well, but her chances are still considered slim. The next GOP presidential debate will feature only Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as Republican hopefuls.
In response to these endorsements for Trump, Minnesota DFL chair Ken Martin issued a statement expressing his party's concerns. However, Emmer's endorsement came after Trump criticized the representative, calling him a "RINO" and accusing him of prioritizing Ilhan Omar over the former president. Trump's remarks were made when Emmer was vying to replace former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, but ultimately, Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana was chosen for the position.
Emmer's endorsement of Trump may come as a surprise to some, considering his past positions that seemed at odds with Republican Party orthodoxy. He voted to certify Biden's presidential election and has supported raising the debt ceiling, keeping the government open, and implementing marriage equality laws.
Rep. Tom Emmer, an attorney with his own law firm before entering politics, has represented Minnesota's 6th Congressional District since 2014, succeeding former Rep. Michelle Bachmann. His district encompasses parts of central and eastern Minnesota, including Anoka, Benton, Carver, Hennepin, Sherburne, Stearns, and Wright counties. Prior to his current position, Emmer served in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2004 to 2010, and he ran for governor in 2010, narrowly losing to Democrat Mark Dayton.
As the 2024 presidential race looms closer, Emmer's endorsement of Donald Trump sends a clear message that the Republican Party in Minnesota is rallying behind the former president. It remains to be seen how these endorsements will shape the upcoming primaries and caucuses, but Trump's frontrunner status is undeniable for now.
