As winter settles in, Michigan residents can expect a thin coating of snow on their roads as a weather system moves across the state. Although not a significant snowstorm, this will mark the first accumulation of the year for many.

Originally predicted to arrive Sunday night, the weather system is now expected to start bringing light snowfall as early as Sunday afternoon. The western part of Lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula may even see snow by noon.

According to the European Medium Range Weather Forecast Model, the snowfall is forecasted to be light, with an inch every six hours across the state. The U.S. model predicts a similar scenario, with light snow developing by noon Sunday. However, it is known to run six hours too fast on precipitation areas.

In terms of snow accumulation, both models indicate the same overall situation. The European Model suggests most areas can expect up to one inch of snow throughout Sunday, while the northern regions, specifically north of Traverse City through the Petoskey area, might see up to 2 inches. The U.S. model is slightly heavier, projecting one to 2 inches of snow across much of Lower Michigan, with a possibility of a third inch along the northwest shoreline.

Michigan residents driving back into the state on Sunday afternoon should exercise caution as this snowy weather might make for slippery road conditions. Slowing down and taking precautions will ensure a safer journey.

With this light snowfall, it appears that Mother Nature is easing Michigan into winter this year. Instead of being hit with one of the biggest snowstorms right at the start of winter, residents can prepare for this mild introduction to the upcoming season.
