In a terrifying incident on Saturday morning, a massive motor pile-up involving at least 25 vehicles occurred on the westbound span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, causing multiple people to be hospitalized. The bridge, which connects the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area with the Eastern Shore region, was shut down due to the crash, leading to significant delays.

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) reported that the collision took place at approximately 8 a.m. The incident occurred amidst heavy fog, adding to the hazardous conditions on the road. As a result, the bridge has been closed, and long delays are expected in the areas of Annapolis and Kent Island for an extended period.

Aerial footage of the scene revealed the wreckage, with several tractor-trailers, pick-up trucks, cars, and SUVs involved in the crash. Particularly striking was the image of a truck carrying a liquid tank trailer, which appeared to have pinned a sedan against a rail.

Photos released by the MDTA showcased the backed-up traffic near the bridge, with emergency vehicles on the scene dealing with the aftermath of the collision. The exact number of injured individuals and the severity of their injuries are yet to be determined. It remains unclear what caused the initial collision and whether the fog played a contributing factor.

Authorities are urging drivers to postpone their travel plans across the bridge. Currently, eastbound and westbound traffic is taking turns on the eastbound span. This decision comes as a precaution due to foggy conditions and limited visibility. As a result, motorists are advised to utilize US 50 on both sides of the bridge, allowing local roadways to remain open for first responders and residents.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and authorities will be working diligently to ensure that traffic can safely resume on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge as quickly as possible. In the meantime, the focus remains on providing medical attention to those injured in the collision and taking measures to prevent further accidents in the area.
