A huge fire broke out in Louisville, Kentucky, early Wednesday causing extensive damage to a vacant commercial building near I-64. The blaze, which sent thick smoke plumes into the air, resulted in the closure of the highway in both directions. Firefighters quickly responded to the scene and managed to contain the fire without any reported injuries.
According to Donovan Sims, the public information officer for the Louisville Fire Department, the fire originated inside the one-story building located near one side of the highway. Video footage shared by the fire department showed the structure fully engulfed in flames before sunrise.
After bringing the fire under control, firefighters were seen extinguishing the flames in additional footage shared by CBS affiliate WLKY. However, some traffic disruptions persisted in the area.
Transportation officials announced on social media that all eastbound and westbound lanes of I-64 were initially blocked following the fire. They also stated that inspectors were assessing a nearby bridge on the interstate, indicating that the closure of the affected portion of I-64 would likely continue for an unspecified duration.
The vacant building where Wednesday's blaze occurred has a history of catching fire. According to Sims, Louisville firefighters have responded to two fires at the site in the last year alone, with one incident involving a car fire.
What sparked the fire Wednesday morning remains under investigation. An arson team, along with other fire officials, were present at the scene to evaluate the situation and determine the cause of the blaze.
Authorities have reopened the affected section of I-64, allowing traffic to resume its normal flow. The investigation is ongoing as officials work to determine the cause and take necessary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
