The European Union (EU)'s diplomatic service, the EU External Action (EEAS), released a statement on Monday, expressing deep concern over the tragedy that unfolded in the village of Zaongo, located in the north-central region of Burkina Faso.

The EU External Action conveyed its condolences to the victims' families and condemned the merciless attack. Burkina Faso has been grappling with internal unrest following a successful coup d'état staged by a junta in July 2022, resulting in the country being under military rule. Earlier in April, acts of terrorism claimed the lives of at least 44 individuals in separate attacks on villages in northern Burkina Faso, which were swiftly denounced by authorities. Later during the same month, a similar onslaught by armed men in military uniform resulted in the deaths of 136 others, including innocent babies, in a village situated within the same region. The government initiated an investigation into the attack, aiming to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Burkina Faso has emerged as a hotspot for violence in the Sahel region, as Islamist groups affiliated with al Qaeda and the Islamic State have been operating and spreading terror. The instability and deteriorating security situation have left the people of Burkina Faso as the primary victims of these recurring attacks.

The EU, in its statement condemning the latest tragedy, reasserted its unwavering support and solidarity with the people of Burkina Faso. The organization referred to them as the "first victims" of the ongoing security crisis within the country.
