DEDHAM, Mass. - Residents of Massachusetts are preparing for a winter storm set to hit the state this weekend, bringing a mix of snow, rain, and strong wind gusts. The storm is expected to make travel conditions hazardous and cause potential disruptions throughout the region.
According to Boston 25 Meteorologist Shiri Spear, Friday will see steady rainfall persisting at least until lunchtime, with drizzly and foggy conditions lingering into Saturday morning. After a brief dry period, a significant storm is predicted to arrive during daylight hours on Sunday.
Spear shared an "early-look" snow map, indicating the likelihood of up to half a foot of snow in certain areas of the Bay State. She mentioned that while coastal flooding is not expected, the winds will become gusty. The southeastern parts of Massachusetts are projected to receive less than 3 inches of snow, while areas to the north and west of Taunton, including Boston and the North Shore, may see between 3 to 6 inches. The best chance for receiving 6 inches of snow is predicted to be north and west of 495 and the Mass. Pike, where the precipitation is likely to remain all snow without much rain mixing in.
Regions located south of the Mass. Pike and along the coastline could experience more mixing of rain during Sunday, transitioning to snow later in the day. Spear emphasized that the change to snow will occur later across Cape Cod and the Islands with only minimal accumulation.
Although temperatures during the day on Sunday are expected to be mild, limiting snow accumulation in certain areas, overnight into Monday could pose problems. Spear noted that overnight into Monday morning is when the real issues are anticipated, potentially causing a slow Monday morning commute.
Snowfall is anticipated to taper off around mid-day on Monday, followed by dry and chilly weather settling in for the rest of the week.
As the storm approaches, residents are advised to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and make necessary preparations for the potential impacts of snow, rain, and gusty winds.
