In a decisive effort to combat human trafficking in Manatee County, the local Sheriff's Office executed a successful operation that resulted in the arrest of 17 individuals. Dubbed "Operation Refuge," the undercover investigation targeted both those involved in prostitution and individuals seeking minors for sexual exploitation.

Over the course of Thursday and Friday, detectives strategically posted ads on adult websites to attract potential perpetrators. The Sheriff's Office reported that an astounding 189 people responded to these online ads, unknowingly engaging with undercover officers. Disturbingly, even after being informed that the girls involved were under 15, all 189 individuals continued to converse with the detectives.

Out of the 189 respondents, six men arranged to meet with minors for illicit sexual acts. These men were promptly arrested after exchanging money with the undercover law enforcement officers. The identities of the individuals involved are:

In addition to the six men arrested for soliciting minors, ten women were also apprehended during the same investigative period on prostitution charges. The Sheriff's Office has made the decision not to reveal the names of these women.

During the course of their operations, detectives discovered at least one woman who was identified as a victim of human trafficking. The Sheriff's Office expects further victims to come to light as the investigation progresses. They also revealed that charges are pending for an individual suspected to be involved in human trafficking.

In addition to the undercover actions, authorities conducted raids on three massage businesses suspected of engaging in criminal activities. The owner of Royal Relaxation on Whitfield Avenue and an employee at Latin Relaxation Cortez Road West are facing charges of deriving support from the proceeds of prostitution. VIP Sauna on North Tamiami Trail was cited for multiple code violations. The Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with Manatee County Code Enforcement, is actively pursuing legal action to permanently shut down these establishments. Sun Spa on 15th Street East has already been shuttered due to the ongoing investigation.

The Manatee County Sheriff's Office is committed to protecting the community from the increasingly pervasive issue of human trafficking. By conducting proactive operations such as "Operation Refuge" and targeting businesses involved in illicit activities, law enforcement authorities are intensifying efforts to bring justice to victims and dismantle human trafficking networks operating within the county.
