BALTIMORE -- Samuel Wise Jr., 24, has been sentenced to life in prison, with all but 50 years suspended, after pleading guilty to the murder of Chesley Patterson, the manager at La Scala Ristorante Italiano in Little Italy. The incident occurred last year during an attempted robbery.

Wise Jr. entered his guilty plea on Monday in Baltimore Circuit Court, confessing to charges of first-degree murder, use of a handgun during the commission of a crime of violence, and first-degree escape. The shooting took place near the intersection of Eastern Avenue and South Broadway in Fells Point.

According to co-workers interviewed by WJZ, Patterson was fatally shot just after midnight as he was leaving the restaurant. The tragic incident occurred shortly after Patterson had closed up shop for the night and was on his way home.

The incident shocked and saddened the close-knit community, prompting an outpouring of support for the victim's family and demands for increased safety measures.
