Man Found Shot to Death on West Birmingham Street, Marks City's 119th Homicide

In the early hours of Saturday morning, tragedy struck the streets of west Birmingham as a man was discovered shot to death. The incident occurred at the intersection of Avenue W and 18th Street in Ensley, prompting a quick response from West Precinct officers. The case of the unidentified victim adds to the rising number of homicides in the city, now reaching a total of 119 so far this year.
At approximately 3 a.m., law enforcement received a Shot Spotter alert, indicating the sound of gunfire in the area. As officers made their way to the scene, the call was updated to report a man lying motionless on the roadway. Sgt. LaQuitta Wade, spokesperson for the Birmingham Police Department, stated that upon their arrival, the victim was found wounded and unresponsive. Tragically, Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead at the scene.
According to Sgt. Wade, Shot Spotter detected approximately nine rounds fired during the incident. However, investigators have faced challenges in identifying the victim as no eyewitnesses have reported witnessing the shooting. As a result, the details surrounding this crime remain limited.
This fatal incident now marks the 119th confirmed homicide in Birmingham this year. It is important to note that among these cases, one involved an officer-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency, and eight others have been deemed justifiable.
