Police have launched an investigation after the body of a 22-year-old man was found inside Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park over the weekend. The man, who was wearing black tactical gear, was discovered by employees on Saturday before the park opened. The Garfield County Sheriff's Office reported that the man was armed with a semi-automatic rifle and a semi-automatic handgun, along with multiple loaded magazines for both weapons. He was also found wearing body armor and what appeared to be a ballistic helmet.
Authorities believe that the Carbondale-area man entered the park illegally when staff members were not present. The Garfield County coroner is currently investigating the cause and manner of his death. Police also discovered several explosive devices in the vicinity of the man's body and in his car. As a precautionary measure, a bomb squad and members of the Garfield County All Hazard Response Team were called in to ensure the safety of the park visitors by searching for any other potential bombs.
The sheriff's office emphasized the potential danger posed by the suspect, stating that "given the amount of weaponry, ammunition, and explosive devices found, the suspect could have implemented an attack of devastating proportions upon our community and first responders." Thankfully, the swift discovery and intervention by park employees prevented any harm from being done to the public or park visitors.
Following the discovery, investigators conducted a thorough search of the man's home and performed a meticulous sweep of Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park for two days. As of Monday, the sheriff's office has determined that the public was not at risk, and the man's activities seem to have been isolated to the park's property.
The investigation into this incident is still ongoing, and authorities have not released the name of the deceased individual at this time. The reopening of the adventure park was delayed until it was determined to be safe for the public. The Garfield County Sheriff's Office is working diligently to gather all necessary information in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to this tragic discovery.
