A 32-year-old man with a history of mental illness and drug abuse has been charged with second-degree intentional murder in connection with a fatal stabbing at a bus stop in Edina. Adam Jami Garcia of Minneapolis was charged in Hennepin County District Court following the apparently random attack that claimed the life of 62-year-old Christian H. Lundegaard from Richfield.
According to the criminal complaint, the incident unfolded near a cluster of retail outlets in the 6700 block of S. York Avenue last Wednesday shortly before 7 p.m. The motive behind the stabbing remains unclear. Garcia was swiftly arrested at the scene and is currently held in jail on $1 million bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday afternoon, though no attorney is listed for him in court records.
Surveillance footage from various businesses captured the confrontation between Garcia and Lundegaard at the bus stop. The footage shows Lundegaard attempting to flee from Garcia, who pursued him. The two engaged in a scuffle, resulting in Garcia striking Lundegaard and causing him to fall to the pavement. Garcia then collected items from the ground before walking away.
A bus driver who arrived at the scene shortly after the stabbing reported seeing Lundegaard crouched down and observed him being struck by an object that caused him to fall. The driver noted that Lundegaard did not fight back and appeared to be trying to protect himself.
Following an investigation, the police discovered the knife used in the attack in a nearby sewer grate. Lundegaard had sustained five stab wounds, including two to the chest, as confirmed by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office.
Court records reveal that Garcia has a history of criminal convictions, including burglary, theft, disorderly conduct, trespassing, and property damage. He has also been civilly committed twice in recent years due to mental illness and chemical dependence. In December 2020, a report resulting in Garcia's first commitment to a treatment center revealed his abuse of methamphetamine, opiates, and cannabis, as well as his diagnosed schizophrenia and other psychological disorders, raising concerns about his potential to harm himself or others.
The victim, Christian Lundegaard, had been on a positive trajectory, having maintained sobriety for 10 years. On the evening of the incident, he had just finished shopping at a grocery store and was planning to contribute non-alcoholic sparkling grape juice to a family Thanksgiving gathering the following day.
Christian Lundegaard was the brother of Karen Lundegaard, a metro editor at the Star Tribune. He was also the son of Bob Lundegaard, a former Minneapolis Tribune reporter and movie writer who retired in 1989. Furthermore, his stepmother, Ingrid Sundstrom Lundegaard, is a retired Star Tribune journalist.
As the legal proceedings continue, the motive for the attack and the psychological factors behind Garcia's actions remain under investigation. The tragic incident has left the community in shock and mourning the loss of a beloved family member and respected journalist.
