In a significant development, a 45-year-old man has been arrested in the theft of a bronze Jackie Robinson statue, which was discovered cut off at the ankles and later found smoldering in a trash can at a city park in Wichita, Kansas. The suspect, Ricky Alderete, was taken into custody earlier this month in connection with a kidnapping case and now faces multiple charges, including those related to the statue theft.

According to Wichita police Lieutenant Aaron Moses, there is no evidence to suggest that the theft was motivated by hate. Instead, it is believed that the intention behind the crime was to sell the stolen metal for scrap. Police Chief Joe Sullivan emphasized that Alderete's arrest was just the beginning, indicating that more arrests are expected in connection with the case. However, specific details regarding Alderete's identification as a suspect were not disclosed.

The brazen theft occurred last month when the bronze statue, honoring Jackie Robinson's groundbreaking role in breaking Major League Baseball's color barrier, was severed from its base at a park in Wichita. Only the feet of the statue were left behind in McAdams Park, where children involved in the youth baseball league, League 42, play. The number "42" is a tribute to Robinson's iconic jersey number during his time with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

The discovery of the burned remnants of the statue took place five days later when fire crews responded to a trash can fire at a different park, approximately 7 miles away. Investigators found surveillance video capturing the theft, and an abandoned truck believed to be associated with the crime was also located.

Alderete, currently in jail on a $150,000 bond, is facing charges of felony theft and aggravated criminal damage to property related to the statue case. Additionally, he has been charged with identity theft and making false information in an October 2022 incident involving a pawn ticket. Court records also reveal that Alderete has been charged with kidnapping and aggravated burglary in a separate case, although no further details have been provided.

In the wake of the theft, the community rallied around the cause, with donations amounting to nearly $300,000 pouring in. Bob Lutz, the executive director of the Little League nonprofit responsible for commissioning the sculpture, expressed gratitude for the support received. Lutz also stated that a replacement for the damaged statue could be erected within a few months, utilizing the viable mold created by the late artist, John Parsons. The estimated cost of replacing the statue itself is projected to be around $50,000, leaving excess funds that could be utilized to enhance programming and facilities.

Jackie Robinson's legacy as a trailblazer in sports and civil rights remains deeply ingrained. Before his breakthrough with the Brooklyn Dodgers, he played for the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro Leagues, paving the way for generations of Black American ballplayers. While Robinson passed away in 1972, his impact lives on, with his widow, Rachel Robinson, still revered at the age of 101.

As the investigation into the theft of the Jackie Robinson statue continues, Wichita police are determined to hold all involved parties accountable for their actions.
