NEW YORK -- A 64-year-old man has been arrested on multiple charges, including aggravated harassment, hate crime, and stalking, after videos of him spewing hateful rhetoric at a halal cart worker went viral.
Stuart Seldowitz was taken into custody by police on Wednesday following an investigation into the disturbing incident that occurred at the Adam Halal Food Cart. Several cell phone videos captured Seldowitz hurling derogatory remarks at the worker.
In one of the videos, Seldowitz can be heard saying, "I'm gonna put big signs here that say, 'This guy believes in Hamas'," as well as accusing the worker of being a terrorist and supporting terrorism. He even went as far as stating, "If we killed 4,000 Palestinian kids, you know what, it wasn't enough."
According to Mohamed Hussein, a 24-year-old worker at the halal cart, Seldowitz, who was not a customer, approached him and asked about his origin. When Hussein replied that he was from Egypt, Seldowitz allegedly began accusing him of supporting Hamas.
When reached for comment, Seldowitz failed to respond to CBS New York's repeated attempts to contact him. He had previously made claims to other news outlets that Hussein expressed support for Hamas, causing him distress. However, Hussein strongly denies these allegations.
"It would be preferable if he came and apologized instead of trying to manipulate the narrative," said Islam Moustafa, co-owner of the halal cart.
The incident has raised questions about Seldowitz's motives for repeatedly targeting the halal cart worker amidst the already heightened tensions surrounding the conflict in the Middle East.
"I don't know what you're trying to do, trying to say. The situation is already very tense, and we don't need further provocation," expressed Nawer, another member of the halal cart team.
Seldowitz, now facing serious charges, awaits further legal proceedings as authorities work to ensure justice is served in this hate-fueled incident that has sent shockwaves throughout the community.
