In a startling revelation, it has been reported that nearly 47 log-in attempts were made to Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra's parliamentary account from Dubai. The information comes just a day before Ms Moitra is set to appear before the Lok Sabha's Ethics Committee to address allegations made by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey regarding "cash-for-query" claims.
Sources familiar with the matter have alleged that these log-ins were made with the intention of asking questions on behalf of businessman Darshan Hiranandani, in exchange for bribes and favors. Mr. Dubey has raised concerns about such actions, questioning whether MPs should be promoting the interests of capitalists rather than working in the best interest of the nation.
In her defense, Ms Moitra has admitted to sharing her log-in credentials with Mr. Hiranandani, whom she has referred to as a long-time friend. However, she vehemently denies any financial motivation behind her actions and maintains that the questions were her own. She has also pointed out that she is not the only MP to have shared log-in information in the past.
Mr. Dubey has accused Ms Moitra of compromising national interest by sharing her parliamentary portal log-in and password with an outsider, citing the agreement MPs sign to keep such details confidential. He has called for appropriate action against her.
The allegations against Ms. Moitra have been further complicated by an affidavit submitted by businessman Darshan Hiranandani, in which he admits to giving bribes to her in order to target the Adani Group and Prime Minister Narendra Modi through her questions. Ms. Moitra has argued that Mr. Hiranandani was coerced by the government into filing the affidavit and has expressed a desire to question him during her appearance at the panel.
The Trinamool MP has also stated that she believes the Adani Group is behind the allegations due to her vocal criticism of the conglomerate.
The Lok Sabha's Ethics Committee hearing will undoubtedly shed more light on these allegations and determine the appropriate course of action. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining the integrity of parliamentary accounts and raises questions about the relationships between MPs and external entities. As the investigation continues, the nation awaits the outcome of this high-profile case.
