In a seismic event that rattled the region, a preliminary-magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck the Malibu area on Friday afternoon, with tremors felt throughout much of the greater Los Angeles area. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred at 1:47 p.m., with the epicenter located approximately 8 miles southwest of Thousand Oaks. The quake was measured at a depth of 7.5 miles.

Although the Los Angeles Fire Department reported that the earthquake was widely felt in Los Angeles, there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. ABC7 viewers also reported feeling the temblor in Huntington Park, San Bernardino, Lancaster, and Costa Mesa.

Shortly before 2 p.m., the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center reassured the public that there was no tsunami threat or danger associated with the earthquake, as stated in their social media post. The USGS initially measured the earthquake at a magnitude of 4.7, but later downgraded it.

Coincidentally, the earthquake occurred on the 53rd anniversary of the devastating 1971 San Fernando earthquake, also known as the Sylmar earthquake. Registering a magnitude of 6.6, the 1971 earthquake claimed the lives of 64 people and caused extensive damage amounting to over $500 million.

In light of this recent earthquake, ABC7 has compiled a list of essential items to have in an earthquake kit, emphasizing the importance of being prepared for future seismic activity. Whether it's the "big one" or smaller tremors, having an earthquake kit can make a significant difference in times of emergency.

As authorities continue to assess the situation, residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during potential seismic events in the future.
