Lori Vallow, known as the 'Doomsday Cult' mom, made a court appearance on Thursday as she faced two charges of conspiracy to murder her relatives. Previously convicted in May for the murders of her two children, Tylee and JJ, Vallow now stands accused of plotting the deaths of her fourth husband, Charles Vallow, and her niece's husband, Brandon Boudreaux.
Vallow, who had been extradited from Idaho to Arizona, was indicted over the death of Charles Vallow in June 2021 and the planned murder of Brandon Boudreaux in February 2022. It is alleged that Vallow conspired with her brother, Alex Cox, to carry out these killings.
The alleged conspiracy emerged as Vallow delved deeper into violent religious fanaticism, fixated on the impending apocalypse and her marriage to doomsday author Chad Daybell in late 2019. In June 2020, the bodies of Tylee and JJ were discovered on Daybell's property, leading to his own pending murder trial in April 2024.
During her court appearance, Vallow appeared in an orange prison jumpsuit, displaying a smirk. Prosecutors claim that her descent into religious zealotry led her to believe her relatives were possessed by zombies, necessitating their elimination to save them.
Alex Cox, who died in December 2019 from natural causes, had insisted that he shot Charles Vallow in self-defense. However, prosecutors argue that the killing had been premeditated, as both Vallow and Cox became embroiled in apocalyptic beliefs. They believed they could save their possessed relatives through lethal means, exploiting their religious fanaticism as a justification.
In addition to Charles Vallow's murder, Vallow also allegedly planned to kill Brandon Boudreaux. Boudreaux narrowly escaped an attack in October 2019 when he was shot at from a moving car. Investigators claim that he suspected Cox was behind the attempt, asserting that Cox and Vallow conspired to kill him and Charles due to their expressed concerns over religious extremism within the family.
Vallow, who maintained her innocence during her previous conviction, continues to deny the murder charges against her. At her sentencing earlier this year, she claimed that no one was murdered, attributing the deaths to accidents, suicides, or fatal side effects from medications.
The tragic disappearance of Tylee and JJ occurred in September 2019, but their remains were not discovered until law enforcement conducted a search of Daybell's backyard in June 2020. Court documents suggest that Vallow's desires to be ready for the second coming of Christ and fulfill a "more important mission" drove her to rid herself of her family.
As the trial unfolds, the details surrounding Vallow's alleged involvement in a web of conspiracy and religious extremism will continue to shock and captivate the nation.
