Superintendent Royal Gurley announced Leatherwood's appointment on Monday, November 20th.

Leatherwood, who brings decades of wide-ranging leadership experience within Charlottesville City Schools, began his career at CHS as a teacher and basketball coach in 1981. Over the years, he assumed various administrative roles within the school, including six years as CHS principal. In the later stages of his career, Leatherwood worked in the division's central offices, specifically in human resources and as the coordinator of alternative learning programs. Despite officially retiring in 2012, he has continued to serve as an interim principal in several schools within the district.

Superintendent Gurley expressed confidence in Leatherwood's abilities, citing his respected reputation as an educator and leader since his earliest days in the school system. Leatherwood has already begun his interim position and will continue to lead Charlottesville High School into the next year.

The appointment of Leatherwood comes at a crucial time for Charlottesville High School, as the school has been dealing with recent troubles and the departure of Principal Pitt.
