In a concerning development, a home belonging to U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, who is overseeing the federal election subversion case against former president Donald Trump, was the subject of a fake emergency call on Sunday night. This incident is the latest in a series of false swatting reports aimed at the residences of public officials in recent days.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, law enforcement officers responded to a report of a shooting at a Washington, D.C. home linked to Judge Chutkan around 10 p.m. However, upon arrival, the police swiftly determined that no such shooting had taken place.
Judge Chutkan has been subjected to numerous threats ever since she was assigned Trump's case last year. In August, a woman from Texas was apprehended after she called the courthouse and made death threats against Judge Chutkan and other officials. An investigation led authorities to trace the woman's phone number, and she later confessed to placing the threatening call, as documented in court records.
This latest incident follows a surge in swatting incidents targeting high-profile public figures over the holiday season. Among the individuals whose homes have been targeted are Republican U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Democratic Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, who disqualified Trump from the state's presidential primary ballot invoking the Constitution's insurrection clause.
Additionally, bomb threats were made against state capitols and courthouses in multiple states last week, resulting in lockdowns and evacuations. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) described these threats as hoaxes, as no explosives were found.
In a statement made on Friday, Attorney General Merrick Garland expressed deep concern over the increasing number of threats and called them "deeply disturbing." He held a closed-door meeting with top Justice Department leaders to discuss the issue of violent crime and steps to address it.
The safety and security of public officials must be ensured, as these incidents not only pose a direct threat to their well-being but also undermine the functioning of our democratic institutions. Authorities must thoroughly investigate these false swatting reports and bomb threats, holding those responsible accountable for their actions.
