Two-time Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein has officially announced her intention to seek the party's nomination for the White House in 2024. In a video posted on social media, Stein expressed her belief that the political system is broken and criticized the influence of the two major parties, which she claimed are "bought and paid for" by Wall Street.
Stein previously ran as the Green Party nominee for president in both 2012 and 2016. However, her 2016 candidacy drew criticism from Democrats who blamed her for siphoning traditionally Democratic voters away from Hillary Clinton in crucial swing states.
This latest announcement from Stein comes at a time when there are increasing doubts about the strength of President Joe Biden's chances for reelection. According to a recent CNN poll, former President Donald Trump, the favorite in the race for the 2024 GOP nomination, is narrowly leading Biden in a hypothetical rematch.
Interestingly, the same poll also indicated that independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. garnered 16% support in a three-way race involving Biden and Trump. However, it is important to note that support for third-party candidates in polls often does not translate to equal support in actual elections.
Stein's involvement in the Green Party extends beyond her own presidential aspirations. She previously served as an adviser to Cornel West's presidential campaign, although West ultimately decided to run as an independent last month after seeking the Green Party nomination earlier this year.
As Stein throws her hat into the ring once again, the Green Party nomination race for the 2024 election is expected to become more competitive. With questions surrounding the strength of the two major parties and the potential for a significant independent candidate, the dynamics of the upcoming election cycle are sure to be intriguing.
