In a concerning development, Israeli tanks reportedly entered the Al Amal hospital complex in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, where over 8,000 displaced people were seeking shelter, according to the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS). The PRCS claimed that the tanks fired live ammunition and smoke grenades after surrounding the hospital for over a week.
The aid agency communicated this information in a series of messages between 10 a.m. ET and 11 a.m. ET. CNN, however, has been unable to independently verify the situation and has reached out to the Israel Defense Forces for comment.
Israel has previously alleged that Hamas militants utilize hospitals and other infrastructure as cover for their military operations and tunnel systems. Earlier today, Israeli forces reportedly instructed people to evacuate the hospital building at gunpoint, as confirmed by Muhammad Abu Musabih, the director of Ambulance and Emergency Services at the hospital.
The PRCS also reported that an Israeli tank fire earlier today resulted in the death of one displaced woman and injured nine others. Currently, there are approximately 8,000 displaced people and 100 staff members within the hospital complex and the adjacent PRCS headquarters, as confirmed by a PRCS official speaking to CNN.
The PRCS further claimed that the Israeli forces demolished the outer wall of the building and launched smoke bombs at the displaced people and the association's staff. The situation is rapidly deteriorating, raising concerns for the safety of medical crews, the wounded, the sick, and the thousands of displaced people taking refuge within the hospital.
Originally, residents of northern Gaza were advised to evacuate to the southern city for safety. However, as Israeli operations increasingly focus on Khan Younis, the situation has worsened for the already displaced individuals. Journalists on the ground informed CNN that there could be as many as 100,000 displaced people seeking refuge in United Nations shelters and other facilities in the area.
The Israeli military's instructions for civilians to leave neighborhoods in the region indicate that the humanitarian crisis continues to escalate. As tensions rise, the fate of thousands hangs in the balance, with urgent appeals for a peaceful resolution to the conflict becoming increasingly critical.
