Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly informed President Biden that Israel will take military action against Yemen's Houthi movement if the United States fails to do so, according to a report by Israeli publication N12News. The warning comes in response to continued harassment and attacks by the Iran-aligned group on Israeli and U.S. forces in the Middle East.
It was revealed by Israel's national security chief of staff, Tzachi Hanegbi, during a conversation with journalists Amit Segal and Ben Caspit, that Israel intends to respond to the Houthi movement's hostile actions. The group has seized multiple Israeli-linked ships in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab strait – a crucial sea lane for global oil shipments. Moreover, they have launched ballistic missiles and armed drones at Israel.
The report from N12News stated, "Netanyahu informed Biden... if you don't act against the Houthis, we will act militarily." No official comments have been received from the White House, the State Department, or Netanyahu's office regarding the matter.
Last week, three commercial vessels were attacked in the Red Sea, prompting a U.S. warship, the USS Carney, to shoot down three Houthi drones that were heading towards the vessels in question. According to a U.S. official, this action was taken in self-defense as the drones were launched from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.
The Houthis, who currently control much of Yemen and its Red Sea coast, have also recently seized a British-owned cargo ship that had ties to an Israeli company. In response to these acts, the U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions on 13 individuals and entities believed to be funding the Houthi movement in Yemen. The aim of these sanctions is to restrict the flow of funds to those enabling Houthi attacks.
Houthi officials have justified their actions as a show of solidarity with Palestinians. Meanwhile, Israel has condemned these attacks on ships as "Iranian acts of terrorism" that pose a threat to international maritime security.
A Houthi military spokesperson warned that all ships destined for Israeli ports in the Red Sea and Arabian Sea would be targeted by their armed forces if Gaza, which the movement supports, does not receive necessary supplies such as food and medicine.
The situation between Israel and the Houthi movement continues to escalate, with Israel expressing its willingness to take military action if necessary. The international community closely watches the developments and efforts to mitigate the conflict's impact on both regional stability and global security.
