In a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir sparked controversy by criticizing US President Joe Biden's approach towards Israel. Ben-Gvir accused Biden of prioritizing humanitarian aid and fuel to Gaza, claiming that if former President Trump were still in power, the US conduct would be different.
The remark immediately drew condemnation from prominent Israeli politicians, including Minister-without-portfolio and National Unity chairman MK Benny Gantz, opposition leader MK Yair Lapid, and Labor chairwoman MK Merav Michaeli. Gantz emphasized the importance of acting through proper channels to protect Israel's strategic relations, national security, and the ongoing war effort. He called on the prime minister to reprimand Ben-Gvir for his irresponsible comments.
Lapid, in a statement, criticized Ben-Gvir for jeopardizing Israel's international status and damaging national security. He also pointed out that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had no control over the extremists in his government. Lapid urged the prime minister to rein in Ben-Gvir.
Michaeli went a step further and called for Ben-Gvir's dismissal. She argued that the minister's intervention in the American election campaign was a severe strategic blow that would be endorsed if not met with consequences. Michaeli urged Netanyahu to take action, stating that failure to address the issue would send a message that the prime minister supported Ben-Gvir's harmful remarks.
However, not all politicians expressed criticism towards the Israeli National Security Minister. Shas chairman and war cabinet member MK Aryeh Deri publicly thanked President Biden for his support during challenging times and praised the United States for its kindness.
Prime Minister Netanyahu responded to the controversy emphasized Israel's appreciation for the support received from the Biden administration throughout the ongoing war. While acknowledging disagreements, Netanyahu stressed that Israel, as a sovereign state, made its own decisions to protect its national interests, even when there is no agreement with the US.
The interview in The Wall Street Journal shed light on Ben-Gvir's growing political influence since being mainstreamed by Prime Minister Netanyahu. It highlighted his advocacy for Jewish settlement in Gaza and his support for voluntary resettlement of Palestinians. The article also mentioned Ben-Gvir's rejection of a potential hostage deal and its connection to Netanyahu's subsequent announcement opposing a similar deal.
The controversial remarks made by Ben-Gvir have sparked debate within the Israeli political landscape. Critics argue that his statements not only undermine Israel's relationship with the US but also hinder efforts in the ongoing conflict. With differing opinions and calls for action, the fallout from the interview continues to reverberate throughout Israeli politics.
