In a daring operation that took place on January 29th, a team of Israeli commandos, disguised as medical workers and Muslim women, carried out a raid in Jenin hospital, a volatile city in the occupied West Bank. However, the killing of three Palestinian men during the operation has now sparked accusations of potential war crimes.
According to Israel's military, the joint undercover operation involving the army, Shin Bet security service, and border police was aimed at apprehending militants. One of the men killed was identified as a member of the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas, while the others were said to be affiliated with the Jenin Brigade and the armed wing of Islamic Jihad.
The United Nations experts, who are specialized rapporteurs tasked with examining human rights issues, weighed in on the incident. They stated that, under international humanitarian law, killing a defenseless and injured patient being treated in a hospital constitutes a war crime. The experts also highlighted the use of disguises by the Israeli forces, asserting that this act of perfidy is prohibited in all circumstances.
The CCTV footage captured from the hospital revealed a group of approximately 10 individuals, dressed in civilian clothes and medical attire, including three wearing headscarves and women's clothing. Armed with assault rifles, they walked through the hospital corridors.
The UN experts now call for Israel to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. As of now, the authorities have not responded to the allegations.
The raid in Jenin hospital took place in the midst of escalating violence in the West Bank, following the attack on Israel by Hamas on October 7th, and the subsequent Israeli invasion of Gaza.
The accusations of potential war crimes have raised international concern and put the spotlight on the complex and volatile dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The authorities will now face mounting pressure to address these allegations and ensure that justice is served.
