In a dramatic incident on Wednesday, an industrial truck with three occupants veered off course, crashing through a guardrail on Tukey's Bridge in Portland and plunging into Casco Bay below. Despite the alarming nature of the accident, all three individuals inside the truck managed to escape and were found sitting on a nearby walking path when emergency responders arrived at the scene.
According to Portland Deputy Fire Chief Chad Johnston, the truck broke through the guardrail, rolled down a steep hill, and finally landed in the water. Emergency crews promptly rushed to the location and initiated efforts to retrieve the submerged vehicle. It has been reported that the truck is presently leaking fuel, intensifying the urgency to safely remove it from the bay.
However, communicating with the individuals proved challenging due to a significant language barrier. As a result, the exact circumstances leading up to the accident remain unclear. Fortunately, an unidentified individual from the water district, along with several other civilians who happened to be in the vicinity, came to the aid of the truck's occupants, assisting them out of the water.
Efforts are currently underway to determine the cause of the accident and ensure the damaged truck is successfully recovered from Casco Bay. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of both driver safety and the swift response of local communities in times of crisis.
As the investigation progresses, authorities will continue to provide updates on the accident.
