In preparation for one of New York City's much-anticipated holiday events, the Rockefeller Center tree lighting, authorities have implemented heightened security measures and street closures. While pro-Palestinian supporters plan to protest during the ceremony, the NYPD remains dedicated to ensuring the safety of attendees and has emphasized that the celebration will not be disrupted.
The NYPD has reportedly obtained a threat assessment indicating a "heightened and dynamic risk environment" due to ongoing tensions surrounding the Israel-Hamas conflict. Malicious actors may perceive mass gatherings, iconic locations, and high-profile events, such as the Rockefeller Center tree lighting, as potential targets during the holiday season.
Despite these concerns, the NYPD affirms that families should still attend the festivities. Chief of Patrol John Chell states, "We allow people to exercise their first amendment, but by no means do we allow anyone to come out here to do hate, crime, or assault."
To accommodate the influx of visitors in the Midtown area, certain streets around Rockefeller Center will be closed to vehicle traffic daily from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. Additionally, pedestrian access will be provided on East 51st and 48th Streets between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, allowing individuals to view the tree and partake in the holiday spirit.
On the first three Sundays in December, Fifth Avenue will be fully open to pedestrians between 48th and 59th Streets, offering a jovial atmosphere for all to enjoy.
While the general threat level remains unspecified and non-credible, the NYPD urges the public to remain vigilant given the expected crowd size. Despite the planned pro-Palestinian protest alongside the tree lighting ceremony, law enforcement is prepared for any potential disruptions following the recent arrests of demonstrators during the Thanksgiving Day parade.
As New York City gears up for this beloved holiday tradition, the authorities are committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees.
