An IDF reservist has been arrested following the shooting of armed civilian Yuval Castleman during a terror attack in Jerusalem, according to Israeli media reports. Castleman, aged 37, was killed by Sgt. Aviad Frija after he shot the attackers responsible for the incident on Weizman Boulevard last week. The attack resulted in the deaths of four people and multiple injuries, with Hamas taking responsibility.

Castleman, an attorney from Mevaseret Zion, was driving to work when he witnessed the terror attack unfold. In response to the threat, he pulled over and drew his gun, ultimately shooting the terrorists. However, Sgt. Frija believed Castleman to be a terrorist who still posed a threat. Footage taken at the scene shows Castleman tossing his gun, falling to his knees, and raising his arms above his head while shouting "Don't shoot" as IDF soldiers approached him. Despite this, he was shot and killed.

Frija's lawyers argued that Castleman made suspicious movements with his hands, which led to Frija perceiving him as a continued threat. Testimony revealed that Frija believed he was firing at a terrorist who posed a life-threatening danger. His intention was not to commit an illegal "extra judicial killing." Frija ceased shooting when he saw that Castleman had been wounded and was on the ground.

Castleman's family, however, referred to the incident as an execution. His father, Moshe, stated that the soldiers "didn't read the situation correctly." The incident has raised questions about the extent to which liberalized gun laws and encouraging eligible Israelis to carry weapons could potentially create safety risks.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, when questioned about Castleman's killing, defended the government's policy on arming eligible Israelis. He emphasized the need to maintain security amidst the continuing threat of terrorism.
