Jeremy Albert Best, a resident of Idaho, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the tragic deaths of his wife, Kali Jean Randall, and their unborn child, according to a new criminal complaint filed on Monday.

The complaint, revealed by East Idaho News and reviewed by PEOPLE, alleges that Kali Jean Randall, 38, was shot and killed in her home on Thursday evening by her husband, Jeremy Albert Best, 48. After the alleged incident, Best fled the scene with their 10-month-old child, Zeke.

Authorities say that Best was later found naked inside a sleeping bag on the side of a road in Idaho Falls, approximately 60 miles away from the family's residence in Victor, Idaho. Tragically, the lifeless body of 10-month-old Zeke was discovered near where Best was found.

The amended criminal complaint filed in the Idaho 7th Judicial District Court states that Best shot his wife from behind. The filing further accuses him of committing the act "willfully, unlawfully, deliberately, with premeditation, and malice aforethought." Alongside the two counts of first-degree murder, Best has also been charged with the illegal use of a firearm.

Bonneville County Coroner Rick Taylor has not yet released the cause of death for baby Zeke. Meanwhile, the Teton County Prosecuting Attorney's office has refrained from providing comments on the case or speculating on potential additional charges.

The Bonneville County Sheriff's Office shared in a statement that Best's discovery on Saturday morning was made by a group of hunters who stumbled upon him while he was naked in a sleeping bag. The 911 caller who reported the incident described Best as "making odd statements." After receiving medical clearance, Best was taken into custody and is currently being held at the Bonneville County Jail pending his arraignment.

The family of Kali Jean Randall, including her brother Brian, expressed shock and disbelief over the tragedy. Brian described his sister as a "genuine beautiful soul" and admitted that the family was unaware of any underlying issues between Kali and Best. The couple had been married since September 2022, according to Kali's social media posts. Kali was an artist known for her handcrafted jewelry and had previously worked as a veterinary technician.

The Randall family released a statement expressing gratitude for the support they have received during this difficult time. "Our Zeke is now at rest with his loving mama and unborn sibling. The pain we feel is unimaginable, and we thank everyone for their support. You will never know how you have lifted our family up during this time," the statement read.

As the investigation continues, authorities have assured the public that further information will be made available in due course.
