In a direct response to the U.S. and U.K. strikes launched in Yemen, Houthi rebels have vowed to escalate their campaign of disrupting regional trade. The Iran-backed group, known for their ongoing conflict with Saudi Arabia in the region, remains defiant despite the military operations conducted against them.
The strikes were carried out in retaliation for a lethal drone attack on a U.S. base in Jordan that claimed the lives of three American soldiers. The escalating tensions have prompted President Biden to pledge an ongoing response, targeting Iran-backed groups not only in Yemen but also in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon. The White House's national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, has not ruled out the possibility of future strikes within Iran.
Houthi spokesman, Mohammed al-Bukhaiti, took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express the group's unwavering stance. "The US-British coalition's bombing of a number of Yemeni provinces will not change our position," he stated. Al-Bukhaiti further emphasized their determination to continue military operations against Israel until the crimes of genocide in Gaza cease and the siege on its residents is lifted.
Calling their war a "moral" duty, al-Bukhaiti noted that their intervention to support the oppressed in Gaza was essential for the preservation of humanity. He warned that the American-British aggression against Yemen will not go unanswered and that any escalation on their part will be met with a corresponding response.
Amidst this backdrop, tensions between Israel and Hezbollah have intensified, threatening to open another front in Israel's ongoing conflict with Hamas. Hezbollah, an Iran-backed terror group based in Lebanon, has launched hundreds of missiles across Israel's northern border since October 7. Israeli military officials have issued a warning, stating that they would not hesitate to invade if necessary.
"We do not choose war as our first priority, but we are certainly prepared," said IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari. He emphasized that Israel would continue to take action wherever Hezbollah is present, not only in Lebanon but also in Syria and other distant locations.
As the situation in the Middle East remains highly volatile, the international community closely watches for further developments. The ongoing conflict between various factions, backed by regional and global powers, poses significant challenges and raises concerns of further escalation in the region.
