In a recent development, House Republicans have released email records that shed light on the communication between Joe Biden, the former vice president, and his son Hunter's business associate. These exchanges took place 54 times while Joe Biden was serving as vice president, some of them coinciding with his trips to Ukraine and his son's involvement with a Ukrainian gas company.

The released records, however, do not include the messages themselves but provide information about the dates and participants in the email exchanges. NBC News has not reviewed the contents of the emails.

According to the records, Joe Biden emailed his son's associate, Eric Schwerin, a total of 35 times before and after his 2014 trips to Ukraine. Notably, five emails were exchanged just prior to Joe Biden's trip to Ukraine on June 7, 2014, and 27 emails were sent between the end of June and his second trip to Ukraine on November 21, 2014.

These communications primarily occurred in relation to an agreement for Hunter Biden to serve on the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian natural gas company. Hunter Biden reportedly earned around $1.2 million from Burisma in 2014, and federal prosecutors have alleged he made over $1.4 million from 2016 to 2019.

House Democrats have pointed to statements indicating that Eric Schwerin worked as Joe Biden's financial adviser from 2009 to 2017, assisting him with tax filings. Schwerin, however, has not responded to requests for comment.

Earlier this year, Representative Jamie Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland, shared that during a March interview, Schwerin had stated that Joe Biden was not involved in the business activities of his son or any other relatives. Raskin emphasized Schwerin's affirmation that there were no transactions related to these businesses in Joe Biden's bank account.

The email records were made public as part of law enforcement records released by House Republicans after testimony from IRS whistleblower Joseph Ziegler. Ziegler provided the documents, along with a sworn affidavit, to the House Ways and Means Committee. The committee's leader, Representative Jason Smith, a Republican from Missouri, oversaw the proceedings and also heard testimony from another IRS whistleblower, Gary Shapley.

It is important to note that these email records do not reveal the content of the messages exchanged between Joe Biden and his son's associate. The release of these records comes as Joe Biden is scheduled to face misdemeanor and felony federal tax charges in Los Angeles in early January.

Former President Donald Trump has previously made false claims that Joe Biden intervened in ousting Ukrainian prosecutor Victor Shokin while he was investigating Burisma. Multiple U.S. officials, however, testified to Congress that Shokin's removal was part of an effort to combat corruption.

Hunter Biden addressed his business dealings in his 2021 memoir, stating that while few brought tangible results, the financial support was helpful during a difficult time. He mentioned that it allowed him to spend more time with his late brother, Beau, and reduced the need to constantly search for clients.

As further investigations proceed and the legal proceedings involving Joe Biden unfold, the extent and implications of these email communications will likely continue to be scrutinized.
