In a bid to quell concerns over potential government shutdown, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) reaffirmed that the House GOP has no intention of halting government operations over border spending, despite recent threats made by fellow Republican members.
One such member, Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), had issued a threat to withhold government funding until Democrats and President Biden agree to border security and asylum reforms in H.R. 2. However, Speaker Johnson clarified that Roy's actions were not aimed at shutting down the government.
In a letter penned on Tuesday, Roy and his colleagues expressed their stance, stating that "funding for federal government operations must be contingent upon the president signing H.R. 2, or a similar measure, into law and addressing the ongoing border crisis."
Notably, Roy is not the only member of Congress to threaten withholding government funding in light of border security concerns. Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) also shared his intentions, writing, "I will not vote to fund the government until our border is secure" in a post on X.
The Senate concluded its legislative session last month without reaching a consensus on funding for Ukraine or border security, which Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) attributed to the influence of former President Trump on the Republican-majority House. Schumer pointed out that the year was marked by chaos, extremism, and paralysis, owing to divided government and what he termed as "MAGA extremism."
Although tension surrounding border spending remains palpable, House Speaker Mike Johnson's assurances have sought to assuage concerns of a potential government shutdown. As the debate continues over border security measures, both Republicans and Democrats will be tasked with finding common ground to avert any potential disruption to government operations in the future.
