The letter, addressed to Edward Siskel, assistant to the president and White House counsel, seeks to determine whether President Biden was involved in his son's decision to defy a congressional subpoena.

House Oversight Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) and Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) penned the letter, obtained by NBC News, in an effort to gather evidence and shed light on the extent of the president's involvement and potential obstruction of Congress. Specifically, they are seeking "documents and communications sent or received by employees of the Executive Office of the President regarding the deposition of Hunter Biden," as well as any records related to "President Biden's statement about his family's business associates on December 6, 2023."

The request comes after an official statement from the White House indicating that President Biden was aware in advance of his son's intention to defy the congressional subpoenas. This revelation has raised concerns among the GOP chairmen, who are now questioning whether the president may have engaged in a conspiracy to obstruct Congress.

Comer and Jordan wrote in the letter, "The fact that the President had advanced awareness that Mr. Biden would defy the Committees' subpoenas raises a troubling new question that we must examine: whether the President corruptly sought to influence or obstruct the Committees' proceeding by preventing, discouraging, or dissuading his son from complying with the Committees' subpoenas. Such conduct could constitute an impeachable offense."

The House Committees specifically referred to a statement made by Hunter Biden during a press conference outside the Capitol on December 13. Instead of participating in the closed-door deposition, Hunter Biden reiterated his offer to testify in a public hearing and addressed the investigations into his family.

While the White House declined to comment on the matter, the office of Abbe Lowell, an attorney for Hunter Biden, has not yet responded to requests for comment.

The request for White House communications underscores the intensifying scrutiny surrounding the impeachment inquiry and further hones in on the actions of President Biden and his involvement in his son's refusal to comply with the congressional subpoenas.
