New York police have apprehended a man who reportedly opened fire on a subway platform on Tuesday night, scaring off a would-be mugger. The suspect in the attempted robbery is now facing charges, while the shooter, identified as John Rote, has been arrested for his involvement.
The incident took place at the 49th Street NRW station, where a 49-year-old homeless man allegedly tried to mug a 40-year-old woman near the exit. Matthew Roesch, the mugging suspect, demanded money from the woman, threatening to steal her purse. However, Rote, who overheard the confrontation, intervened by firing shots, effectively interrupting the attempted robbery. Thankfully, no one was injured during the altercation.
After authorities asked the public for assistance in identifying the shooter, Rote was apprehended on Wednesday afternoon. Surveillance images captured him calmly leaving the scene, carrying a tote bag from a popular camera store, a green bookbag, and a tablet. He now faces multiple charges, including criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a firearm, and menacing.
Richard Davey, the top transit official in the city, expressed his disdain for such conduct, stating, "We don't tolerate this kind of behavior in NYC Transit, period." He commended the quick arrest made by the NYPD and emphasized the importance of surveillance cameras in apprehending criminals.
Transit crime rates in New York City have seen a 3.6% decline this year after a surge during the COVID-19 pandemic and anti-police protests following George Floyd's death in Minneapolis. However, statistics show that they are still 29% higher than the same period last year.
Incidents of travelers being shoved from behind in front of moving subway cars have been a particular concern. Last month, a 30-year-old woman was pushed into the side of a departing train at the nearby 53rd Street and 5th Avenue subway station, sustaining life-threatening injuries. The suspect, Sabir Jones, is a repeat offender with known mental health issues.
Tragically, in the past two years, there have been 37 reported incidents of individuals being shoved onto subway tracks, including the fatal 2020 case of Michelle Go at the Times Square subway station.
Law enforcement continues to work diligently to maintain safety in New York City's transit system. The recent arrests of both the attempted mugger and the individual who intervened with gunfire is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the police and the public.
As the city strives to improve transit safety, officials are focused on reducing such heinous acts and ensuring the well-being of commuters and residents alike.
