Hit-and-Run Tragedy Claims Life of Zipcar Passenger on Highway 13 in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. - A fatal hit-and-run incident occurred on Highway 13 in Oakland on Sunday night, resulting in the tragic death of an 18-year-old passenger who had exited a rented Zipcar. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the incident led to a two-hour closure of the roadway.
The Alameda County coroner identified the victim as Arif Mohammed, an 18-year-old resident of New York City. According to the CHP, the incident began when a black Toyota Corolla, driven by an unidentified individual, collided with the Zipcar shortly before 11 p.m. The driver of the Corolla then fled the scene, leaving behind the disabled Zipcar in the slow lane.
In response to the collision, Mohammed and his driver decided to exit the vehicle and began walking on the shoulder of the road. Tragically, during this time, a second hit-and-run driver struck Mohammed with their black sedan, resulting in his untimely death. The CHP confirmed that the driver of the second vehicle survived the incident, though their identity has not been disclosed.
Authorities have indicated that the black sedan is likely to exhibit damage on its front bumper, hood, and possibly the front windshield. No further information regarding the two hit-and-run drivers has been released at this time.
