In a shocking incident on Monday, a man fleeing the police caused a car crash in Alabama, injuring Gayle Manchin, the head of an economic development partnership of the federal government and 13 state governments, and wife of US Sen. Joe Manchin. According to reports from Homewood Police in a Birmingham suburb, the man is now facing charges of assault in connection to the crash.

Gayle Manchin, aged 76, sustained injuries in the wreck while she and her colleague, Guy Land, were on their way to an event in Birmingham for the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC). Joe Manchin, in a statement, confirmed that Gayle Manchin, who serves as the co-chair of the commission, was admitted to a hospital but has since been discharged on Wednesday.

The ARC, in a statement, confirmed that Gayle Manchin is now back in West Virginia, where she will continue to recover with the support of her family. The statement also expressed gratitude for the well wishes received from partners throughout Appalachia and beyond, and acknowledged the exceptional care provided by the medical team at UAB.

Guy Land, the ARC's congressional liaison, was also injured in the incident and is currently hospitalized. Further details about his injuries were not disclosed by the agency.

According to Homewood Police Sergeant John Carr, the chase ensued when officers attempted to stop a car connected to a felony warrant and a traffic offense. The seven-minute police pursuit weaved through Homewood and its surrounding areas before concluding with the fleeing car colliding with the SUV carrying Gayle Manchin and Guy Land.

The incident has left the community in shock, demonstrating the dangers that arise when individuals flee from law enforcement. As investigations continue into this harrowing event, authorities are working to gather all the necessary evidence.

It remains crucial for everyone to exercise caution while on the road and obey the instructions given by law enforcement, ensuring the safety of both themselves and others.

The thoughts and prayers of the community go out to both Gayle Manchin and Guy Land, wishing them a swift recovery from their injuries.
