Late on Saturday night in downtown Austin, Texas, a gun-wielding suspect was killed and three innocent bystanders were injured when three police officers responded to a disturbance call outside a bar and opened fire on the assailant. The incident occurred on East 6th Street, a popular entertainment district in the heart of the state capital.
Interim Police Chief Robin Henderson revealed during a news conference on Sunday that the police received a call at 11:52 p.m. reporting a man attempting to enter a bar with a firearm. Upon arrival, the officers were directed by bar employees to the suspect who was standing outside the establishment. The officers approached the suspect, and he brandished his weapon, pointing it at both the officers and the nearby innocent bystanders.
In response to the immediate threat, the three Austin Police Department (APD) officers discharged their department-approved firearms at the suspect. As a result, the suspect sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced deceased. Fortunately, none of the officers were injured during the incident. However, three individuals who were in the vicinity of the shooting suffered varying degrees of injuries. One of the bystanders was in critical condition and was transported to a nearby hospital.
The identity of the suspect has not been released at this time. The authorities are currently investigating the incident, with the police department's Special Investigations Unit collaborating with the Travis County District Attorney's Office. In accordance with department protocol for officer-involved shooting investigations, the three officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative duty.
The entire incident was captured on the officers' body-worn cameras. As per police department policy, the footage will be released to the public within 10 business days. This will provide further insight into the sequence of events that transpired on that fateful night.
Additionally, this shooting occurred around seven hours after another incident at Barton Creek Square Mall, where an argument between two individuals escalated, resulting in at least one person pulling out a firearm and opening fire. One adult sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital. The authorities are currently investigating the mall shooting, and no arrests have been made thus far.
As both of these incidents continue to be investigated, the Austin community remains on edge. The local authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and visitors to the city.
