In an unprecedented move, Guatemala's President-elect Bernardo Arévalo has unveiled his Cabinet picks, aiming for a gender-balanced representation within the government. These selections mark a historic shift in the country's political landscape, as Arévalo also seeks to incorporate officials outside of his Seed Movement party to fill crucial positions.

Having emerged as a surprise victor in the previous year's election, Arévalo campaigned on a platform centered around combatting Guatemala's deeply entrenched corruption. Demonstrating his commitment to this cause, the President-elect assures that his Cabinet choices are honorable individuals and pledges to establish an autonomous anti-corruption commission to meticulously evaluate his administration's performance.

Among Arévalo's notable appointments is Francisco Jiménez Irungaray as the interior minister. Irungaray previously served in a similar capacity under former President Álvaro Colóm, but now faces scrutiny from a United Nations anti-corruption mission for alleged involvement in the improper awarding of a government contract.

Furthermore, career diplomat Carlos Ramiro Martínez, who has had extensive experience as the deputy foreign affairs minister, including during the tenure of outgoing President Alejandro Giammattei, will assume leadership of the foreign affairs ministry.

Political analyst Cristhians Castillo from San Carlos University's Institute of National Problems commented on the Cabinet selection, stating, "Even though this Cabinet has many attributes, it shows that the Seed party, being a young party, has to give its officials to external sectors."

Arévalo's decision to include officials from outside his party could prove crucial, as ongoing investigations by the Attorney General's Office continue to target the President-elect's party and its members. Despite accusations of wrongdoing, the prosecutors have yet to present concrete evidence. Foreign election observers have affirmed the fairness and legitimacy of the election while calling out the alleged politically motivated campaign against Arévalo.

As Arévalo prepares to be inaugurated this coming Sunday, the diverse composition of his Cabinet reflects his determination to tackle corruption and steer Guatemala towards a new era of transparent governance.
