Gov. Beshear Declares State of Emergency as Train Derailment in Rockcastle County Prompts Evacuations

LIVINGSTON, Ky. - Environmental leaders, along with local law enforcement and state emergency management officials, held a press conference on Thursday morning to provide an update on the train derailment in Rockcastle County. The incident, which occurred between Mullins Station and Livingston on Wednesday night, led Governor Andy Beshear to declare a state of emergency.
Law enforcement authorities have reported no incidents among the families who chose to remain in the area. However, those who were evacuated are still unable to return home at this time. Efforts are focused on extinguishing the fire, and Joe McCann, the director of emergency management and hazardous materials for CSX, expressed his gratitude for all the responders involved in addressing the incident.
CSX, the parent company of the derailed train, has stepped up to assist individuals affected by the evacuation. They have purchased 200 hotel rooms in the local area to accommodate those displaced by the derailment.
Kentucky Emergency Management acknowledged the evacuations that occurred after the incident, with many people being relocated to Rockcastle County Middle School. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) confirmed that they have succeeded in reducing hazardous levels near the derailment site. However, the final decision on when residents can safely return home will be determined by county officials.
