LAS VEGAS - Republican presidential candidates gathered at the annual Republican Jewish Coalition's summit on Saturday to emphasize their unwavering support for Israel. The event took an unexpected turn when former Vice President Mike Pence announced the suspension of his campaign, overshadowing the efforts of other 2024 contenders.
Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley used her remarks to criticize former President Donald Trump, who has garnered strong support from Orthodox Jews. Haley highlighted the need for a candidate who can win and steady the ship, subtly taking a swipe at Trump. Refusing to criticize Israel's prime minister in the midst of a tragedy and war, Haley's comments resonated as Israel expanded its ground offensive in Gaza with warnings of a long and difficult war.
At the summit, Vivek Ramaswamy expressed support for Israel's rejection of the two-state solution, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis referred to the West Bank as ancient Jewish land dating back to biblical times. Sen. Tim Scott of Florida reiterated his calls to deport foreign students involved in "antisemitic" protests on college campuses.
Just as attendees were absorbing the candidates' speeches, Pence shocked the room by announcing the suspension of his campaign. Citing the need for prayer and deliberation, Pence concluded that this was not his time to run for president. The announcement, though unexpected, received mixed reviews from attendees, with some expressing disappointment in losing a candidate they viewed as having integrity.
Former President Trump, the front-runner, did not reference Pence's decision in his speech. However, his strong support among the audience was evident even before he took the stage. When Chris Christie, a regular critic of Trump, began speaking, several attendees booed and others left the room in protest.
Sen. Tim Scott, on the other hand, garnered rave reviews for his fiery speech, receiving three standing ovations. His proposal to revoke visas for foreign nationals attending anti-Israel protests on college campuses drew particular applause. Attendees praised Scott's energy and delivery, even though many still considered Trump their top contender.
While Haley, Ramaswamy, and DeSantis had some supporters, one attendee dismissed their White House bids as nonviable, asserting that Trump is the clear nominee based on current polls.
The Republican Jewish Coalition summit showcased the candidates' dedication to supporting Israel, but Pence's unexpected departure from the race added a surprising twist to the event. As the race for the GOP nomination continues, all eyes remain on Trump, who maintains a strong grip on his support base.
