George Conway Calls Supreme Court Win for Trump "Not a Big Deal"

In a recent interview with CNN's chief Washington correspondent Jake Tapper, conservative lawyer George Conway dismissed former President Donald Trump's Supreme Court win as "not a big deal." Conway's statement comes after the Supreme Court rejected the Department of Justice's request to expedite Trump's appeal process in the federal election subversion case filed against him.
The DOJ indicted Trump in August on four federal felony counts, including obstruction of an official proceeding, related to his actions surrounding the riot at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Following the indictment, Judge Tanya Chutkan ruled against Trump's claim of presidential immunity. In response, Trump's lawyers appealed Chutkan's ruling, prompting the request for the Supreme Court's involvement.
While CNN's Tapper initially characterized the Supreme Court's rejection of the appeal's expedited process as a win for Trump, Conway offered a different perspective. He stated that he did not believe the decision was significant, as he expects the case to be disposed of by the intermediate appellate court by the middle of January at the latest.
Conway further questioned the validity of Trump's immunity claim, asserting that the Supreme Court's rejection of the expedited process is indicative of the weakness of the former president's arguments. He expressed confidence that once the appellate court concludes its proceedings, the trial in the district court can move forward.
The Supreme Court's decision has sparked differing reactions, with Trump celebrating the outcome on social media while claiming election interference. Trump's lawyers have argued that his actions leading up to the Capitol riot should be protected by presidential immunity. However, Chutkan's opinion emphasized that the sitting president's actions do not grant lifelong immunity from prosecution.
George Conway has been an outspoken critic of Trump since 2018, even during his ex-wife Kellyanne Conway's tenure as a senior counselor in the Trump administration. The couple announced their divorce in March 2023.
It remains to be seen how the federal election subversion case against Trump will unfold as it progresses through the appellate court process, ultimately leading to a trial in the district court.
