In a dramatic turn of events, Kaitlin Armstrong, the prime suspect in the murder of professional gravel cyclist Anna Moriah "Mo" Wilson, has been apprehended by Deputy U.S. Marshals in Costa Rica. Armstrong had been on the run since a warrant for her arrest was issued shortly after Wilson's tragic death on May 11, 2022.
The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force was tasked with tracking down Armstrong, who was believed to have fled to Costa Rica on May 18, 2022. Adopting aliases and altering her appearance by cutting and dyeing her hair, Armstrong attempted to evade capture. However, her efforts were ultimately thwarted by determined law enforcement officials.
Deputy Marshals Emir Perez and Damien Fernandez arrived in San José, Costa Rica, on June 20, 2022, and immediately began their search for Armstrong. Their initial focus led them to the beach town of Jacó, but their efforts proved fruitless. Acting on a tip, they redirected their investigation to Santa Teresa, another popular beach town known for attracting surfers and yoga enthusiasts.
On June 22, 2022, Perez and Fernandez arrived in Santa Teresa and quickly realized that Armstrong was blending in among the local population. Fernandez remarked, "A lot of the women in Santa Teresa look just like Kaitlin - a lot of them." To aid in their search, the Marshals employed a female operative who attended multiple yoga classes to identify Armstrong. Additionally, they relied on local contacts to report any potential sightings of the fugitive, but these leads proved unfruitful.
Unbeknownst to the Marshals, Armstrong had evaded their grasp by traveling to San José where she underwent plastic surgery. Thus, during their initial search in Santa Teresa, she was absent from the area. It was only after several days that the Marshals discovered the truth, leaving them astonished at the remarkably fortuitous timing of their pursuit.
Refusing to be deterred, the Deputy Marshals devised another plan to locate Armstrong, which ultimately proved successful. On June 29, 2022, Armstrong was finally apprehended and arrested. The breakthrough came when a receipt for cosmetic surgery was found at the hostel where she was discovered. Perez noted that while Armstrong had attempted to conceal her altered appearance with a bandage on her nose, it was her eyes that ultimately betrayed her identity.
The capture of Kaitlin Armstrong brings a sense of relief and justice to the investigation surrounding the tragic murder of Anna Moriah "Mo" Wilson. Authorities commend the efforts of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force and Deputy U.S. Marshals Perez and Fernandez for their unwavering dedication in bringing Armstrong to justice. The case serves as a reminder that fugitives can never evade the long arm of the law indefinitely.
