In a move to tackle the growing political turmoil over immigration, French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne tendered her resignation on Monday. This development sets the stage for President Emmanuel Macron to form a fresh government in the upcoming days, seeking renewed momentum for his presidency.
Borne's resignation was perceived as a response to Macron's request, as stated in her resignation letter. She highlighted the president's intention to appoint a new prime minister. Borne's departure follows the recent passing of contentious immigration legislation, which garnered support from Macron and aimed to bolster the government's capacity to deport certain foreign nationals.
The approval of the immigration bill required the Macron-led centrist alliance to negotiate with the conservative Republicans party, leading some observers to interpret the government's actions as a shift towards the right. The challenging negotiations and impassioned debates in parliament raised doubts about the government's ability to pass major bills in the future.
Political analysts also speculate that Macron, a staunch advocate for European integration, may be preparing his new government in anticipation of the forthcoming European Union elections in June.
Borne, aged 62, assumed the position of prime minister in May 2022 following Macron's re-election for a second term. She became the second female prime minister of France. However, her tenure was marked by political challenges as Macron's centrist alliance lost its parliamentary majority the following month, necessitating strategic maneuvering and the use of special constitutional powers to push through legislation.
Additionally, Borne faced widespread unrest during the summer, triggered by the fatal shooting of a teenager by the police, which resulted in riots across the country.
In response to Borne's resignation, Macron's office issued a statement accepting her departure, with the president acknowledging her exemplary work throughout her tenure. The statement also confirmed that Borne would continue fulfilling her duties until a new government is appointed.
As Macron prepares to form his new government, several names have been circulating as potential candidates, including Sébastien Lecornu, the Minister for the Armed Forces, and Julien Denormandie, a former Agriculture Minister known for his long-standing support for Macron and instrumental role in launching his political movement.
In France's political system, the prime minister is appointed by the president and is accountable to the parliament. The prime minister holds responsibility for implementing domestic policies and coordinating the government's team of ministers.
