In a recent development, the French government has dismissed claims made by Moscow that Russian forces had targeted French "mercenaries" in an attack on the city of Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine. The French foreign ministry categorically denied the accusations, stating that France does not employ guns-for-hire.
According to Ukrainian authorities, the attack took place on January 16, 2024, and resulted in 17 civilians being injured. They also emphasized that there were no military targets in the area that was struck by Russian rockets.
Responding to the Russian defense ministry's statement, the French foreign ministry asserted, "France has no 'mercenaries' either in Ukraine or anywhere else, unlike some people." They further labeled the claim as "another clumsy Russian manipulation."
Despite Moscow's claim that the strike targeted "foreign militants" in Kharkiv, primarily French mercenaries, no evidence has been provided to substantiate the allegations. Russia's state-run TASS news agency reported that France's ambassador had been summoned in connection with the incident.
Local authorities in Kharkiv reported that 17 civilians were wounded as a result of the attack. Kharkiv region governor Oleg Synegubov also reiterated that there were no military targets in the area. In fact, an observer group called All Eyes on Wagner pointed out that the Russian defense ministry's claim of killing "French mercenaries" was inaccurate. They highlighted that the attack had hit residential areas, energy facilities, and medical facilities instead.
Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, has been enduring persistent shelling since Russia initiated large-scale hostilities in February 2022. Its proximity to the Russian border has made it a frequent target.
As the situation between Ukraine and Russia continues to escalate, it is crucial for accurate and verified information to be shared. Both sides must exercise caution in making claims without substantial evidence, as doing so can further exacerbate the already tense situation. The international community will be closely monitoring the developments and assessing their implications on the ongoing conflict.
