In a recent interview with CNN's Manu Raju, former Speaker Kevin McCarthy revealed that he is considering not running for reelection in 2024. McCarthy stated, "I got the holidays. I will talk to my family about the ideas of what is going forward, and then I will make a decision."

If McCarthy decides to be on the ballot in 2024, he would need to make a choice before California's filing deadline on December 8th. However, the former Speaker remained noncommittal, stating, "I always believe, and you hear me all of the time. You never give up in the process, right? ... And I'm going to look at all options."

This uncertainty comes in the wake of speculation that McCarthy was considering forgoing a reelection bid after his removal as Speaker, a position he had long coveted. Previously, McCarthy had denied such reports and confirmed his intention to run again. When asked about his current leaning, McCarthy responded with, "I don't know."

If McCarthy ultimately decides not to seek reelection, it would create an open race for his seat in California's 20th District, which is considered a safe Republican stronghold. His departure would also place him among the growing number of members opting out of reelection bids in 2024.

As California's filing deadline approaches, the political landscape will be closely watching McCarthy's decision. The 20th District, potentially up for grabs, would undoubtedly attract attention from both Republican and Democratic candidates vying to fill the vacant seat.
