Authorities have announced the arrest of ex-musician Theobald "Theo" Lengyel, 54, in connection with the homicide of Alice "Alix" Kamakaokalani Herrmann after human remains were discovered in a wooded area at Tinley Regional Park in Berkeley. Herrmann, 61, had been reported missing in December.
Herrmann, a resident of Capitola, was last seen in Santa Cruz on December 3. Her relatives reported her missing on December 26 after she failed to catch her flight to Hawaii on December 12, as stated in a press release by the Capitola Police Department.
A competitive paddler and member of the Santa Cruz Outrigger Canoe team, Herrmann had participated in a morning paddling practice on December 3, according to a Facebook post by the Northern California Outrigger Canoe Association. Authorities discovered Herrmann's SUV parked in front of Lengyel's house in El Cerrito, and evidence found suggested that she was the victim of a homicide.
Lengyel, also known as Mylo Stone, is a former saxophonist and one of the founding members of the experimental rock band Mr. Bungle. He had been considered a person of interest from the beginning of the investigation and had been uncooperative with investigators, as stated by the El Cerrito Police Department.
During their search for information related to Herrmann's disappearance, authorities urged residents who frequented regional parks and open spaces to remain vigilant for anything suspicious.
In a 2015 interview shared by Loudwire, former Mr. Bungle musician Trevor Dunn commented on Lengyel's departure from the band, stating that they had decided to continue without him due to his lack of growth and dwindling responsibilities. Dunn mentioned that Lengyel had become upset and they had not heard from him since.
Formal identification of the remains is pending DNA confirmation with the Contra Costa County Coroner's Office. The Santa Cruz District Attorney's Office anticipates making a filing decision regarding the case as early as Wednesday afternoon.
Lengyel is currently being held without bail in Santa Cruz County, according to the sheriff and online jail records.
