In a recent interview with ABC's "This Week" co-anchor Jonathan Karl, former Republican Representative Liz Cheney delivered a stark warning to the nation, urging against reelecting Donald Trump as president. Cheney argued that preventing the former commander in chief's comeback should be the primary focus for both political parties.
Discussing her new book, titled "Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning," Cheney emphasized the urgency of defeating Trump while acknowledging the need to rebuild the Republican Party or potentially establish a new conservative party in the future. She made it clear that her focus lies on the 2024 election as she believes Trump poses an existential threat to the nation.
When asked about the possibility of running as a third-party candidate, Cheney stated she hadn't ruled anything out. However, she emphasized that she would not take any action that could inadvertently support Donald Trump. Democrats have expressed concern that third-party candidates could harm President Joe Biden's reelection chances and play to Trump's advantage.
Cheney noted that even without a No Labels unity ticket, the presence of several third-party candidates such as Cornel West, Jill Stein, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. would likely result in a fractured electorate. She reiterated the paramount importance of finding a strategy to defeat Trump and protect the republic.
In her book, Cheney candidly recounts her decision to support the impeachment of Donald Trump following the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. As the highest-ranking Republican to vote for impeachment, she has consistently challenged Trump's denial of responsibility for the events that transpired that day. Trump was ultimately acquitted by Senate Republicans.
Cheney also emphasized the need to elect candidates who uphold the Constitution in the upcoming election cycles. She expressed concern over the potential lack of commitment to defending the Constitution among some Republican leaders. Mentioning Representative Mike Johnson, who joined other House Republicans in supporting a lawsuit to overturn Biden's win in swing states during the 2020 election, Cheney questioned his reliability to oversee a peaceful transfer of power in 2025.
Cheney's unwavering stance against Trump and his influence within the Republican Party has not come without consequences. Alongside others who have challenged Trump, she has faced threats and hostility. Cheney highlighted the worrisome reality of violence being tied to a former president, calling for careful consideration of the nation's trajectory.
Reflecting on her legacy, Cheney expressed the hope that people would recognize her commitment to putting the country above politics and partisanship when it mattered the most.
As the nation grapples with its political landscape, Liz Cheney's new book serves as a powerful indictment of Donald Trump's presidency and a call to action for Americans to prioritize the preservation of democracy in future elections.
