### Passengers Bused to Destination After American Airlines Flight Diverted

Passengers on an American Airlines flight from the United States headed to Italy faced unexpected travel challenges when their plane had to make an unscheduled landing 140 miles from its intended destination. The aircraft, which could not land as planned due to size constraints, resulted in passengers being bused to their final stop.

American Airlines Flight 780 took off from Philadelphia International Airport at 7:42 p.m. local time on Monday. The flight was scheduled to arrive in Naples, Italy, at 10 a.m. local time, according to data from FlightAware. However, as the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner approached Italy, it encountered an issue.

While off the coast of Italy by the Tyrrhenian Sea, the aircraft, which was about halfway between Rome and Naples, suddenly turned back towards the capital, Rome. This diversion was necessary due to "operational limitations," as explained by American Airlines to CBS News.

Historical flight data revealed that American Airlines typically operates a slightly smaller Boeing 787-8 aircraft for flights to Naples. The Boeing 787-9 is roughly 20 feet longer than the 787-8, contributing to its inability to land at the originally planned airport.

Following the diversion, the plane landed at Rome Fiumicino Airport, and passengers were provided with transportation to Naples. This ground journey added approximately three hours to their travel time.

American Airlines issued an apology to the passengers for the unforeseen disruption and the inconvenience caused by the diversion. Business Insider was the first to break the news about this incident.
