Former Kentucky and NBA star Rajon Rondo found himself in legal trouble over the weekend after being arrested in southern Indiana. According to court records, Rondo has been charged with the unlawful carrying of a handgun, possession of marijuana, and possession of paraphernalia, all of which are misdemeanors.
The incident occurred when a caller reported a Tesla "traveling recklessly" on I-65 in Bartholomew County. Indiana State Police located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop as the car crossed into Jackson County, citing an observed traffic violation.
Witnesses stated that Rondo's Tesla was allegedly traveling at speeds exceeding 100 mph, although he was not speeding at the time of the stop. Curiously, the trooper noticed that the vehicle did not have a license plate.
Upon pulling Rondo over, the state trooper detected the smell of marijuana, prompting a subsequent search. The search led to the discovery of a gun and drug paraphernalia. It was later revealed that Rondo is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to an existing protective order issued on August 16, 2023.
During the arrest, a juvenile who was also in the vehicle with Rondo was released to a family member, as per the police's statement.
Rondo, who had a successful college career at the University of Kentucky, was the 21st overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft. Throughout his more than 15-year NBA career, he played for various teams, including the Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls, and both the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers. Rondo has won NBA championships with the Celtics in 2008 and the Lakers in 2020.
Rondo was briefly detained in jail but was released after posting bond. The charges he now faces will require him to appear in court to address the alleged misdemeanors.
Overall, this incident has further added to the legal challenges Rondo is currently facing, drawing attention not only to his basketball accomplishments but also to the consequences of his off-court actions.
